Pine Release Notes
Version 4.55
University of Washington
Pine(R) is the University of Washington's "Program for Internet News
and Email". It is intended to be an easy-to-use program for sending,
receiving, and filing Internet electronic mail messages and bulletin
board (Netnews) messages. There are versions that will run on many
different flavors of the Unix(R) operating system, as well as a
version with GUI amenities for 32-bit flavors of Microsoft Windows
(95, 98, NT, 2000, Me, and XP).
New in Pine 4.55
Version 4.55 addresses bugs found in previous releases and also
introduces some new functionality.
Additions include:
* Experimental Mail Drop setup is now possible using the "#move"
Namespace
* "Send-Without-Confirm"
* "Return-To-Inbox-Without-Confirm"
* "Signature Color" when viewing a message
* Mail access using POP3 should be faster with modern POP3 servers,
since Pine now uses the TOP and LIST commands if available. Append
"/loser" to the server name to get the old, more paranoid/reliable
behavior.
* NNTP-Range may speed news access if newsgroups are large
* In PC-Pine, the tree icon turns yellow when there is an unexpected
closing of a mail folder
* "Folder-Reopen-Rule"
* Rule Pattern Age intervals and Score intervals may be lists of
intervals now. Careful, Pines prior to version 4.55 will notice
only the first interval in the list.
* Translation of various Unicode punctuation characters and the Euro
symbol found in HTML mail to their US-ASCII equivalents
* New ROLENICK token
* "Warn-if-blank-Subject"
* "Warn-if-blank-To-and-Cc-and-Newsgroups"
* Added PC-Pine features "Quell-User-Id-Prompt" and
"Quell-Personal-Name-Prompt"
* Turned off setlocale call for category LC_CTYPE and now provide a
hidden feature "enable-setlocale-ctype" to turn it back on and a
hidden feature "disable-setlocale-collate" to turn off the
setlocale call for category LC_COLLATE. It is understood that you
probably don't know what this means, in which case you should
leave these features alone. Turning off the CTYPE setlocale solves
a technical problem in some cases.
* Added PC-Pine command line arguments "-install" and "-registry
clearsilent" for use with the new PC-Pine installer.
Bugs that have been addressed in this release include:
* Messages may be unexpectedly marked Deleted or expunged if the
following conditions hold:
+ The folder is accessed using IMAP
+ The feature "Expunge-Only-Manually" is set
+ Some messages in the folder have been Filtered during this
session
+ The folder contains messages which haven't been displayed in
the index or viewed in this session
If these conditions hold, then any messages which were previously
marked Deleted will be expunged from the folder, and a seemingly
random set of the messages which haven't been displayed this
session will be marked Deleted.
* Do not attempt extra authentications after already authenticated
to SMTP server
* Pine appears to hang when viewing mailto urls with
initial-keystroke-list set to start in index
* Crash in mailutil and incorrect hierarchy handling in mailutil
* Crash when viewing last message of a folder when the message is
Expunged and titlebar-color-style is not default
* In PC-Pine, correcting a spell-checked word can sometimes cause a
crash
* Crash when expunging while quitting with a particular combination
of filters and messages in the folder
* Mailboxes connected to via POP3 could display message data for the
wrong message in the event of an expunge
* Change Win2K/XP Kerberos support to not try to get the Kerberos
realm name (needed to work in a pure MS Kerberos environment)
* If inbox-path is set to or defaults to "inbox", then FCCs to inbox
will fail after an incorrect attempt to create inbox in the
primary collection.
* Remote pine config might double in size when running both pine4.4x
and pine4.5x
* Sort and thread subject matching now complies completely with the
specification
* When replying or forwarding something with a charset that is
different from ours, label with our character-set if charset
conversion is enabled.
* Stored passwords work incorrectly if you use two accounts on the
same server
* Can only rename an incoming folder once per session
* WhereIs command sometimes displays negative line number by mistake
* Invisible current line after going from viewing a threaded message
to Main menu and then Index
* When Zooming an index where some messages in the selected set are
in collapsed threads, it wasn't possible to see the selected
messages, and the current message may even have been hidden.
Auto-expand collapsed threads which contain selected messages at
the time of the Zoom.
* TAB command stopped one thread too soon if in threaded index and
the new message was inside a thread.
* Failed open of a folder from a newsgroup caused the equivalent of
an uneXclude when the newsgroup was reopened.
* Rare crash when replying
* With some defective IMAP servers a filter which required a match
in the To pattern would not match. The IMAP server defect is that
the server does not implement a HEADER search for the empty string
to be equivalent to a test for the header existing.
* When forwarding HTML messages with attachments, they are marked as
being HTML Text even though they are being sent out as Plain text.
* Forwarding an attachment can incorrectly use a role even if there
are patterns that aren't matched.
* Whereis fails when searching from a threaded index when in
separate-index-screen mode.
* The message "Keeping x messages and removing y" was counting
filtered (and so invisible) messages in the Keeping number.
* Avoid deeply nested IMAP search commands because some servers
object. This should make large numbers of items in Rule header
patterns work correctly.
* Restore the old justify behavior from 4.44.
* Selecting using WhereIs ^X command did not respect
auto-zoom-after-select
Version 4.53 was a bug-fix release.
No additional functionality was added.
Bugs addressed in the 4.53 release included:
* If a Filter Rule which does not Delete or Move a message is
followed by another Rule which does a Move or Delete, that second
rule will be applied (if there is a match) even if the first rule
also matched
* Crash in address book select screen
* In PC-Pine's MAPI DLL, there was a bug corrupting attachments
(safe to ignore this if you didn't install the external pmapi32
package)
Version 4.52 was also a bug-fix release.
Additions included:
* Experimental method to reopen a newsgroup or POP folder to check
for new messages with < command followed by > command. See the
help text for "Folder-Reopen-Rule" for a short explanation.
Bugs addressed in the 4.52 release included:
* Delete, Rename, and Shuffle broken in Incoming Folders
* Role-based SMTP Server should not override administratively fixed
SMTP Server
* Html typed file with garbage contents can cause crash
* Scramble-Message-Id drops first character of hostname
* When alternate-editor is used to compose, assume charset should be
that of user
* Rare crash when new mail arrives with threading enabled
* Threaded index lines displayed incorrectly with IMAP servers that
do not support threading
* View attachment command should not be available if Full Header
mode is turned on
* In PC-Pine, pine.conf registry setting was always used even if
overridden in the command-line
* Duplicate printing of To and Cc lines when using "all-except" in
viewer-hdrs
* Justification of quoted paragraphs is not possible when forwarding
a non-us-ascii message
Version 4.51 was also a bug-fix release.
Additions included:
* New feature "Disable-Sender"
* New feature "Scramble-Message-Id"
* New feature "Spell-Check-Before-Sending"
* New pico option -Q <quotestr>
Bugs addressed in the 4.51 release included:
* Malformed Date in first message of mailbox causes threading crash
* Fetching POP3 message when /tmp and/or /var/tmp is full causes
crash
* In Rules, Current Folder Type of Any should match even if no
current folder
* Get rid of extra screen redrawing when collapsed thread is changed
* Allow setting Index Line Color to Default explicitly
* Fix LDAP URL parsing
* When Zoomed, Unselect current message advances past next message
* Malformed From address shown incorrectly in THREAD INDEX
* Missing Date in message causes truncated THREAD INDEX display
* Tab should skip over messages inside collapsed thread
* Hangs when sending base64 encoded text
* Current message number not correctly updated when viewing a
message with reverse sorting
* Interoperability problems between pre-4.50 and 4.50 remote address
books
* Role SMTP server not saved when postponing
* Fix delays and multiple warning messages when unexpected text
appears after a BASE64 part
* Fixed session-wide underlining or bolding caused by malformed
enriched or richtext messages
Version 4.50 was an evolutionary release which introduced some new
functionality.
Additions included:
* Threading support
+ Threading display styles configurable
(Threading-Display-Style)
+ Threading index styles configurable (Threading-Index-Style)
+ Options to affect threading display,
"Threading-Indicator-Character",
"Threading-Expanded-Character", and
"Threading-Lastreply-Character"
+ Feature to color thread index lines the same color as the
Important symbol "thread-index-shows-important-color"
+ Feature to make slash command collapse whole thread instead
of just the subthread at current line
"slash-collapses-entire-thread"
+ Feature to keep Pine from asking you about Next and Prev
commands when they move you to another thread

* Rule Pattern enhancements
+ Non-terminating Filter Rules
+ New option in Rule Patterns to match message body text but
not headers
+ "Not" ("!") operator in Header patterns, AllText patterns,
and BodyText patterns
+ New option in Rule Patterns to match messages of a certain
age
+ New option in Rule Patterns to match messages with raw 8-bit
characters in the Subject (Raw 8-bit in Subject)
+ New option in Rule Patterns to match messages which have a
From or Reply-To address which is in your address book (more)
+ New option in Rule Patterns to match messages which are
Recent
+ If Patterns contain elements that are unrecognized, most
likely because they are from a version of Pine which is newer
than the Pine that is running, Pine will not act on them.
_WARNING_: If you are using a version of Pine which is 4.50
or newer and also using a version which is older than 4.50
you should probably read this additional information.
* New option to use a role-based SMTP server
* Rudimentary support for converting a message in a character set
different from yours to your character set when displaying the
message (more). The old, broken ISO_TO_CP and CP_TO_ISO hooks have
been removed.
* Rudimentary support for ISO-2022-JP. Uses EUC for UNIX Pine with
terminals that understand how to display EUC, and uses Shift-JIS
for PC-Pine (more).
* Fcc copies of sent mail may be automatically marked Seen
* Select text body (excluding header) option
* New feature "enable-full-header-and-text"
* New feature "quell-attachment-extra-prompt"
* New color feature "Titlebar-Color-Style"
* More new index format tokens
* "Pass-control-characters-as-is". feature is always turned on in
PC-Pine now
* Now possible to search LDAP from bounce command with ^T
* Attachment viewing now offers option to view by file extension if
mime type is unknown
* New PC-Pine feature "store-window-position-in-config"
* New PC-Pine command line flag "-nosplash" to disable splash screen
* New feature "quell-timezone-comment-when-sending" for working
around paranoid SMTP servers
* Hidden feature "quell-maildomain-warning"
* Add References header to all replies, whether it be in newsgroups
or email
* More efficient use of IMAP connections when viewing and managing
folders
* New PC-Pine registry setting for the pine.conf file
* Pico only preserves the start-stop characters (^Q/^S) if given the
-p option
* If a filter sets status bits and then the user uses D, U, or *
command on a message, don't refilter that message when expunging.
_WARNING_: it will still be refiltered next time the folder is
opened.
* Trivial change so that cursor advances when unselecting the
current message and a new feature to restore the old behavior
"unselect-will-not-advance"
Bugs addressed in the 4.50 release included:
* Potential security problem with remote data folders
* Potential denial of service with maliciously-crafted From: header
* Bug in HTML parser that left underline character turned on
* Bug in HTML parser that swallowed last character when there was a
wrap
* Crash in HTML parser when encountering many links on one line
* Recognize HTML <SCRIPT> and <STYLE> elements so at least we don't
spew them onto the display
* Strip directories from suggested filenames when saving attachments
* Fixed bug that adds extra line for each postpone
* Get rid of duplicate "sent-mail" display after monthly pruning
* Bug using Netscape IMAP server and remote Pine config
* Bug displaying multipart/alternative if text alternative has a
name
* Clean control characters out of status messages unless
pass-control-characters-as-is
* Preserve character set labeling of Subject when forwarding if it
is unchanged
* In PC-Pine, remember script the user sets the font to
* In PC-Pine, turn off scroll bar updating while formatting a large
message for viewing, which is particularly helpful for Windows XP.
* In PC-Pine, rename of folder which was only a case change didn't
work
* Make PC-Pine stop complaining about spaces in filenames for
attachments
* Always write CRLF and not LF newlines when writing out PC-Pine
pinerc
* Fix to handle IMAP referral URL with auth=anonymous properly
* When replying or forwarding something with a charset that is
different from ours, label with that charset if user has not
entered any new characters with high bit set
* With one message selected and it wasn't the currently highlighted
message, Apply Save would get confused
* Crash when adding filter that filters to incoming folder that does
not exist and is first incoming folder other than INBOX
* Out of memory crash with some filters that set status bits
* INBOX didn't work as an Fcc target
* Thread and Score sorts were missing from Sort dialog
* In PC-Pine, don't write screen position to registry if minimized
* Accept nulls in files when reading them into composer
* Justify crashes and bugs with non-whitespace-terminated indent
strings and with long words
* PC-Pine select and copy crash
* Fix quoting for PC-Pine command line arguments
